From Holland St. John - "Sarah Eleanor Givens, who was always referred to as "Ella", was the eldest daughter of Daniel G. and Mary N. Parks. She was born in Posey County, Indiana in 1833 shortly after her parents had moved there from Tennessee. When she was fifteen years of age, she married her neighbor Jeramiah Cash Givens at Mount Vernon, Indiana on March 15, 1849. A short time later, Charles Frederick was born. In 1850 Ella and Jeremiah were living in Marrs Township, Posey County where Jeremiah was a farmer. The value of their real estate was $300. They lived next to his mother Rachel (Jones) Givens and his brother Thomas Jefferson Givens. On October 21, 1851, Sarah Ann was born. On February 17, 1852 Jeremiah and Ella sold their Posey County property. Ella acted through her father Daniel since she was still a minor. In the spring of 1853 the young couple joined the Givens family in the long journey by wagon train to California. Whether Sarah Ann and her brother Charles accompanied their parents on this trip or not, it is not known. It is assumed they were left in Indiana, or they may have started the trip and then returned with an uncle, Jackson Given, in 1854. By 1860 Charles was living in Black Township, Posey County, with Ezekiel and Percella Jones. Ezekiel was the son of David Jones and the grandson of the Reverend Samuel Jones. The trip west proved disastrous for the Givens party. According to family tradition, Ella died en route as well and her mother-in-law Rachel. One source gave this account: "while enroute over the plains Rachel was attacked by cholera and died, and was buried in two barrels in a valley in the Wyoming Territory." There is no record as to where or how Ella was buried."
