Alexander was born in Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, Scotland to parents John Gilmour and Ann Goudie. He married his wife, Jean Park on 20 March, 1872 in Stevenston, Ayrshire, Scotland. By 1900 census report Alexander immigrated to America in 1882 although he was not listed in the 1881 British census and his wife Jean and their two small children were living with her parents on Boglemart Street in Stevenston. Alexander and Jean settled in Clay county where Alexander mined coal. They later moved to Terre Haute.

Alexander Gilmour

Alexander Gilmour, 73 years old, died Sunday afternoon at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. James Condran, of Denver, Colo. He is survived by the widow, Mrs, Jean Gilmour; two sons, Ben and Isaac Gilmour of New Goshen; two daughters, Mrs. James Condron and Mrs. Thomas McCullough; one brother, James Gilmour, of this city; three sisters, Mrs. William Hamilton, Mrs. James Hamilton, both of Terre Haute, and Mrs. Jack Myrick of New Mexico; also 14 grandchildren. The body will arrive Wednesday and will be taken to the home of his sister, Mrs. William Hamilton, 1610 Fifth Avenue, from where the funeral will be held at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon, with the burial in Highland Lawn cemetery.
