Johnson Garrard was born about 1845 in Montgomery County, Kentucky. He enlisted in Co. A, 6th U.S. Colored Troops Cavalry, on September 23, 1864 at Camp Nelson, Kentucky. He died of pneumonia at the camp hospital. Johnson Garrard went directly from slavery into the war against slavery. Per his service records, he was owned at the time of his enlistment by Benjamin Garrard, reportedly of Clark County, KY.
