Maud S. Gardner, long time community leader in San Geronimo Valley, died yesterday at a local hospital after a long illness. She was 90.
Daughter of Swiss immigrants, Mrs. Gardner was born on a farm in Nicasio. After graduation in 1903 from San Rafael High School, she married Edwin B. Gardner. The couple lived in Lagunitas and Woodacre, where Gardner became superintendent for the Mailliard development, later the Lagunitas Development Co., and the San Geronimo Water Co.
Following her husband's death in 1935, she took over the real estate and insurance business he had established in Woodacre and continued to operate Gardner Realty until she was in her mid-80s. She also continued to take university extension courses in her later years.
Mrs. Gardner served on the board of the San Geronimo Valley Association for 15 years, was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club of Marin County, a director of the Woodacre Improvement Club, and the Marin County Board of Realtors and was a past worthy matron of Chapter 215, Order of Eastern Star.
She is survived by a daughter Beryl G. Lane of Sunnyvale; a sister, Hattie Safstrom of San Anselmo; 5 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son and 2 daughters.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Chapel of the Hills in San Anselmo. Inurnment will be at Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery, San Rafael.
