Having been born the daughter of missionary parents in South Africa, she came back to the United States at age 17 to continue her education and attended the Andover Newton Seminary. She married Edward Morse Field on 4 June 1877 in New York, New York. She was listed on the 1900 census as a sculptress and painter and was very fond of playing solitaire. She distanced herself from her husband after he was committed to mental institutions and even listed herself as a widow on the 1900 census even though her husband was still living.
