She was born at the Umlazi Mission Station, where her parents were missionaries. She came to the United States in 1854 for her schooling and was a teacher in the United States in 1859. She was in 1861, a student of art at the Cooper Institute in New York City. Because of a serious illness, Martha later joined her parents in 1863 and returned to Africa. When she had fully recovered by 1869, she joined the staff at the new Inanda Seminary founded by her father. She returned to the U.S. in 1876 and is found in Baltimore, Maryland on the 1880 census. She returned and lived in Inanda, South Africa from 1880 to 1916. In July 1911, she was honored at the 75th anniversary of the start of the American Board Mission to the Zulus. By 1916, she was living with relatives in Claremont, South Africa, where she died. She never married. Her obituary read:
"Lindley - At Cape Town, South Africa, Aug. 18. Martha Jane Lindley, daughter of Daniel and Lucy Allen Lindley, in her 83d year."
