Abelino A. Durán, age 84, a life long resident of Las Vegas, NM, passed away at his home on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 surrounded by his loving family.
Abelino was preceded in death by his parents, José Manuel and Aurelia Avila Durán, two sons, Eddie Durán and Abelino Durán Jr., two daughters, Querina Antonia and Carmen Jessica Durán, two sisters, Carmen Lucero and Viola Vigil and a brother, Quirino Durán.
Abelino is survived by his wife, Sandra Durán of the family home, three sons, Manuel Durán and his wife, Agnes, Juan Durán and Christopher Durán and his wife, Stephanie all of Las Vegas, NM, five daughters, Magdalena Benavidez, Benita García, Michelle Durán and her boyfriend, DeAndre Myers, Christina Durán and Margaret Durán and her boyfriend, Kedrick Wagoner, all of Las Vegas, NM and by 14 grandchildren.
Abelino was born in Apache Springs, NM on May 23, 1930.
Abelino was honorably discharged from the United States Army and was the recipient of the Korean Service Medal with five bronze stars, the UN Service Medal, and the Army Occupation Medal (Germany). Abelino was a POW during the Korean Conflict.
Abelino was a track supervisor for quite a number of years for the AT & SF Railway Company and was a life member and chaplain of Chapter 31 of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 31 in Pecos, NM. Later on he worked for the Ken Lowen Construction Company that built I-25. Abelino was also a transporter for the Veterans Administration Hospital thru the Disabled American Veterans taking veterans to and from all over the State of New Mexico to and from the VA Hospital in Albuquerque, NM for over 30 + years. In his later years he enjoyed his horses and reading and going to the casinos.
All services will be held from the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Las Vegas, NM, with a rosary on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. The interment will follow at Santa Fé National Cemetery, Santa Fé, NM at 12:45 p.m.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrier Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
