A World War II POW
Romney - Jack E DeVault, 66, of 2331 West, County Road 1300 South, died at 4:27 Tuesday in St Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center in Lafayette, after a lengthy illness. He had been hospitalized two days. Mr DeVault farmed in the Romney area for years. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the 8th Army Air Corps 447th Bomb Group and was stationed in England during the war. Born in Lafayette on September 12, 1924, he grew up in White County, attended grade school at Chalmers and graduated from Monticello High School in1942. He moved to the Romney area after serving in World War II. He married Lily Higman in Romney on March 25, 1956. She survives.
Mr DeVault was a member of the Presbyterian Church and Masonic Lodge 441, both in Romney, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1154 and American Legion Post 11, both in Lafayette. He also was a member of the Military Order of Purple Heart and American Ex-POWs and was a sports fan. Surviving are a son, Robert DeVault of Lafayette; a daughter, Lisa DeVault of Indianapolis; and a brother, Max DeVault of Romney. Rev Ken Burris officiating. Interment Wildcat Cemetery. Surviving, a granddaughter, Kristy DeVault, and several Nieces and nephews including, Dan DeVault. His Parents Leo and Gladys DeVault preceded in death.
