Jeltje (Jennie) De Boer Leininger died peacefully Thursday evening, June 21, 2007 of cause's incident to age, and just days after her 93rd birthday. Jennie was born June 15, 1914 in Dedemsvaart in the Netherlands, the oldest child of Harm and Hillegonda Meinders DeBoer. When she was just past five years old, her family moved to Ogden where she immediately began school; she found this difficult, as she did not yet speak English. To make her name easier for her new, American schoolmates, her parents simplified her beautiful Dutch name, Jeltje, to Jennie by which she was known the rest of her life. She married Robert Gerald Leininger in the Salt Lake Temple June 26, 1935 and they parented three children, Patricia (Marlan) Haslam, and twins, Peggy Lee (Neal) Stowe, and Robert Dee Leininger. (Bobby's death in 1995 brought great sadness to her life.) Jennie took great pride in her eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandson. All of them will always remember Sunday lunch on Grandma and Grandpa's patio with Jen's special fried chicken, potato salad, and cake with pineapple topping. Service in the primary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was a special joy to her, and during the post World War II years, Jennie volunteered with the Red Cross and worked in the Civil Defense Force. She loved her many years of service in the Madison Elementary School PTA. She worked 25 years at the old Dee Hospital and then at the McKay-Dee Hospital, retiring as an assistant purchasing agent. After her retirement she returned to the hospital to volunteer with the Pink Ladies, and she enjoyed her association with the members of the Aglaia Social Club of Ogden. A favorite memory will always be her beautiful, flower-filled garden, and especially, true to her Dutch heritage, her variety of huge tulips. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, crocheting afghans for her family, and was an accomplished bridge player. Her husband, Bob, died in January of 1998. In addition to her two daughters and grandchildren, she is survived by two brothers, Arend (Art) and Robert H. DeBoer; and a much loved sister-in-law, Marge (Henry) DeBoer. A brother, Henry DeBoer; and her sister, Helen DeBoer Barlow, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 26, 2007, 11:30 a.m. at Myers Mortuary in Ogden, 845 Washington Blvd. The family will greet friends and family Monday evening from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:30-11:15 a.m. Interment, Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
