She was born on November 5, 1928 to Clarence and Emma Crow. She married Earl Edward Brassfield on July 25, 1950 in New Market, Iowa.
She graduated from Gravity High school in 1946, Northwestern Missouri State University in Maryville, MO in 1950 with a Business degree, and later received a master's degree in History from Central State University. After school, she helped her husband, Earl, manage promotional campaigns for retail stores throughout the country. Both Earl and Shirley retired to Stillwater, where they volunteered for area charities, such as Karmen Korner, Elite Repeat and the Habitat Restore.
She was a seamstress, who created lavish costumes and gowns. She took great joy in creating wardrobes for her daughters, granddaughters, and close friends. She was also a member of the First Christian Church of Stillwater and the Christian Women's Fellowship Group.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Earl Edward Brassfield.
She is survived by her son, John Brassfield and wife, Cheryl, of Oklahoma City; her daughters, Marla Day and husband, Dwight, of Manhattan, Kan.; Karen Lott and husband, Danny, of Stillwater six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
