Lulu Florence Buls, age 97 of Frederika, Iowa died Sunday October 13, 2013, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday October 19, 2013, at St. John Lutheran Church in Frederika with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg with Joel Franzen, Justin Franzen, Brett Franzen, Tyler Hartson, Trenton Hartson, Trey Hartson, Leonard Jarvis, Heath Annett and Dave Bormann serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Heather Van Heiden, Melissa Lacy, Jamie Beatty, Brittany McNeil, Brianna Drewelow, Shannon Wilson, Mandi Collins, Melissa Annett, Alisha Wiggins, Katie Saunders and Morgan Hartson.

Friends may greet the family 4 - 7 p.m. Friday at the Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg with further visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Lulu Florence Buls was born February 14, 1916, in a sod house in Ansley, NE, the daughter of Robert and Minnie (Clingerman) Coen. Lulu received her education by attending country school. She moved to Iowa at the age of 13. Prior to marriage, Lulu was a housekeeper and homemaker for many years. In 1935, she married Raymond Shannon and later divorced. She was the proud mother of one son and two daughters. After her divorce, she moved to Fredericksburg and worked at Ott & Forsman Produce and Barker's Grocery Store. Lulu later married Alfred Buls on February 2, 1958. They made their home in Frederika, IA where she lived the rest of her life.

Lulu and Alfred enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and attending potluck dinners. Lulu was a long time member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Frederika, IA and belonged to the senior citizen group. She was a member of a "500" card playing club. Sh e loved watching Iowa Hawkeye basketball as well as solving Wheel of Fortune puzzles over the phone with her friend Grace. Lulu loved spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Lulu is survived by her son, Duane "Larry" Coen of Davenport; two daughters, LaVonne Hartson of Fredericksburg and Carol (Ray) Annett of Creswell, OR; one brother, Galen "Max" Coen of New Hampton; one sister, Janice (Bud) Theilen of Nashua; one brother in law, Ivan Johannaber of Fredericksburg; ten grandchildren; twenty one great-grandchildren; and sixteen great-great grandchildren with one on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lulu was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Esther Lange, Gloria Johannaber, and Vivian Coen; three brothers, Clyde, Paul and Dean Coen; one son-in-law, James Hartson; two grandsons, Larry Coen and Mark Annett; two step sons, Clarence and John Shannon, and one step daughter, Allene Roeder.
