Civil War: Company A, 6th Vermont Infantry

Nelson W. Chase was the son of Amos and Olive (Preston) Chase, both born in New Hampshire. Nelson appears with his parents in Berlin, Washington County, Vermont, in the 1850 and 1860 US Census. He was still living at Berlin when he was drafted as a private July 13, 1863, and mustered into Company A, 6th Vermont Infantry. He was wounded in action at Cold Harbor, Virginia, June 7, 1864. He was promoted to corporal January 1, 1865, and mustered out June 26, 1865. After the war he became a minister. He was living at Boston, Massachusetts, when he married Lydia J. Brown (abt. 1845, VT-June 10, 1934, CA) at Montpelier, Vermont, on August 4, 1869. The couple returned to Massachusetts where their daughter Alice was born at Marshfield, Plymouth County, on December 4, 1870. Nelson applied for a Civil War veterans disability pension December 19, 1872, and received application No. 324,411 and certificate No. 200,265. The family was living at Rawlins, Carbon County, Wyoming, in 1880, where Nelson served as the census enumerator and indicated he was a clergyman. The family relocated to Socorro, Socorro County, New Mexico, where Reverend Chase and his family appear in the Territorial Census of 1885. Sometime thereafter the family relocated to Cochise County, Arizona, where Nelson died. Lydia applied for a Civil War widow's pension January 18, 1905, and received certificate No. 595,722.
