Margaret Lou Carroll, 80, of Perkins passed into the arms of her loving savior on October 10, 2015 with her loving family at her side. Services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home of Stillwater and a service celebrating Margaret’s life will be held at the First Baptist Church in Perkins on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at 2pm with burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Stillwater. Public visitation will be held at the funeral home in Stillwater from 12pm to 8pm on Monday.
Margaret Lou Hunt was born on February 10, 1935 in Western Payne County near Mulhall, OK to George Jacob and Girtha Mae (Mackey) Hunt. She attended grade school at Darnell Country School. She went to high school in Orlando, but due to her family relocating, she graduated from Coyle High School with the Class of 1952. She worked as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone in Cushing, before going to work for a florist in Stillwater.
In 1959, Margaret met the love of her life, Charles Wayne Carroll, while roller skating and later that year they were married at Southside Baptist Church in Stillwater. The Carrolls remained by each other’s side for 56 years of marriage and had three children. They resided in Stillwater until 1964, when Charles’s job as an Oklahoma State research station superintendent took them to Fort Cobb, OK for 6 years.
In 1970, they returned to Payne County, settling in Perkins where they still reside. Margaret worked as the janitor at First Baptist Church in Perkins from the early 1970’s to the early 1980’s. She also traveled all over Western Oklahoma assisting Charles with crop inspections. Margaret’s love for children led her to run an in-home daycare for many years. Margaret loved the fact that her home was directly across the street from the Perkins Elementary School and she spent 20+ years caring for her grandchildren after school.
She spent many evenings in her backyard where she could hear her grandchildren practicing with the school band and playing various other sports that she followed thanks to the booming public address speakers at the high school. Margaret was imaginative, fun loving and she was a big kid herself. She cherished the opportunity to play games with her kids and grandkids. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, and doing crossword puzzles. She was an amazing cook who specialized in cooking wild game and fish frys. She would often awaken early on Sunday to prepare an entire meal before heading off to church.
Anyone who knew Margaret knew that the cornerstone of her life was her profound love for Jesus Christ. A believer from a young age, Margaret dedicated her life to service at her local church. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, played the piano, assisted with VBS and taught Sunday school for over 50 years. She was one of the founders of the FBC Clothes Closet, a ministry providing free clothes to individuals in need. Her love of music led her to play the piano for a gospel quartet, as well as for the Perkins Senior Center.
Margaret Carroll was a loyal wife, a loving mother, a proud grandmother, a humble servant, and a trusted friend and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister: Alice Silvers, and a brother-in-law: Lewis Dry.
She is survived by her husband Charles Carroll of the home; three children: Kelly Kinder and husband Lynn, of Perkins; Bobby Carroll and wife Pam, of Perkins; Jimmy Carroll and wife Becky, of Perkins; ten grandchildren: Brian Carroll and wife Dana, Chris Carroll and fiancé Jennifer Broaddus, Linden Kinder, Anna Kinder, Hannah Hart and husband Jake, Caleb Carroll and wife Andrea, Kyle Kinder, Kristen Walcher and husband Logan, Hailey Carroll, and Conner Carroll; three great grandchildren: Carson and Lainey Carroll and Beau Williams; Her sister, Betty Dry of Perkins and her brother-in-law, Raymond Silvers of Perkins.
