James , age six, his parents, a three year old brother and five-week-old sister immigrated from Sweden to America . There was much sickness, including smallpox, aboard ship, but they all got well. When the ship docked, they were vacinated and held for several days until June 20 , when they were permitted to land. His father purchased a wagon and oxen and left in the fifth wagon company of the year. After a few days in Salt Lake , the family moved to Brigham City where they spent the winter. They moved on to Logan the next spring. James father took a polygamous wife in 1865 , then James met a lovely young Swedish girl. After their marriage, they were called, with about two hundred other families, to travel to Southern Arizona where they were to settle and try to teach the Indians. The road was non-existant further south and they made their way with difficulty. When they arrived, they built a fort for protection. Their food was extremely scarce. They all shared the milk from one cow and finally killed off their cattle. Carolyn became so ill that they were released and went back to Logan to live. James and his son Ezra hauled wood for one of the families and then would go back and haul some for themselves. It took all day. He farmed and worked to help others, as well as his own family. He died from heart problems.
