Swen and his wife Bengta joined the Church in Sweden. They brought their three young children to America with them. Their family was quarantined because they caught smallpox on board ship. They managed the best they could. When they arrived in New York they were held at the dock for five days along with others, before they were permitted to land.

They traveled by rail to Florence, Nebraska. Swen purchased a wagon and two oxen and they left with the William Budge Company. When he left Sweden, he had considerable money, but traveling expenses, plus purchasing the wagon and equipment to go west, had eaten heavily into it so that by the time they arrived in the Valley, he only had 25-cents left. The Carlsons stayed in Salt Lake a few days and then went north to Brigham City where they spent the first winter, and then went on further north to Logan the following spring.

Swen married Johanna Hammer as a polygamous wife in 1865 and they had nine children. He took an active part in the growth and development of the new territory. He helped build roads, bridges, canals, and assisted in the development of the natural resources. He assisted in the construction of the St. George Temple when he received a call.
