Portland IN United States DAVID L. BUTCHER, 76, of Portland, Ind., died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at Jay County Hospital following a sudden illness. Born Sept. 28, 1930, in Jay County, he was the son of Homer and Myrtle (Crabill) Butcher. He married Mary Jacobs on Oct. 10, 1953. He was retired from Delco Battery, Muncie after 34 years. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran from 1951 to 1953, serving in Alaska. He was a member of American Legion Post 211, in Portland, serving with the honor guard. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Mary; one son, Stephen (wife, Linda) Butcher of Woodburn; one daughter, Mrs. Dave (Cindy) Somers of Portland; two brothers, Homer Butcher of Portland and Max Butcher of Bryant; three sisters, Iva Brotherton of Bryant, Katherine Wood of Greenwood and Frances Goss of Bryant; four grandchildren; five step grandchildren; three great-granddaught-ers; and four step great grandchildren. Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. today at Baird-Freeman Funeral Home, 221 North Meridian St., Portland. Burial will follow service in Green Park Cemetery, with full military graveside rites by American Legion Post 211. Memorials can be made to American Legion Post 211 Honor Guard or American Cancer Society.
