Brigadier General, US Army. He was born in Saratoga, Douglas County, Nebraska, the third child of US Army Captain Andrew Q. Burt and Elizabeth J. Burt. His life as a child growing up on a series of Western forts during the period 1874 to 1892 is detailed in the book "Forty Miles a Day on Beans and Hay," by Don Rickey, Jr. He was appointed to the US Military Academy, West Point, from Ohio, with the Class of 1896. He graduated 55th in a class of 73, the 3723rd graduate of the USMA. Appointed a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry, he was sent to the Philippine Islands, where he participated in the Philippine Insurrection. In 1918, he was promoted to Brigadier General on the War Department General Staff, and retired in 1937. He is also the author and composer of the official USMA alumni marching song, "West Point, thy Sons Salute Thee." He was married to the former Lilian Stewart (1875 to 1949), and his son, Reynolds J. Burt, Jr. is also a USMA Graduate (Class of 1920, graduate no. 6648). He and his wife were living in Alexandria, Virginia, and he died while on vacation in France. (Bio by Kit and Morgan Benson)
