Andrew Sheridan BURT was born 21 Nov 1839, Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, the son of Andrew Gano BURT and Ann Green THOMPSON.

He married Elizabeth Johnston REYNOLDS, 13 Sep 1862 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio.

Andrew Sheridan BURT enlisted as a Private, Company "A," 6th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, April 20, 1861 and was discharged July 15, 1861. He was then appointed from Ohio, as First Lieutenant, 18th US Infantry, May 14, 1861, and subsequently promoted through the grades to Brigadier General, US Volunteers, May 4, 1898. He was honorably discharged from volunteer service, December 31, 1898. Appointed Brigadier General, US Army, April 1, 1901, and retired at his own request, April 15, 1902.

Andrew has been breveted Captain, Jun 19, 1862, "for conspicuous gallantry in the battle of Mill Spring, Kentucky (wounded), Major, September 1, 1864, for the Atlanta campaign and the battle of Jonesboro, Georgia. He was also the author of "May Cody, or Lost and Won" (William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody's most successful play).

Andrew Sheridan BURT died 12 Jan 1915 and was buried in Section 2 of Arlington National Cemetery under a stone which reads: "True patriot, good soldier, loyal friend."
His wife, Elizabeth Johnstone REYNOLDS BURT (1838-1925) is buried at his side. His son, Brig. Gen. Reynolds Johnstone BURT (1874-1969), is buried in a nearby site as is his grandson, Col. Reynolds Johnston Burt, Jr.
