Carol Jo Ann Barton, 74, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at home in Irmo, S.C., after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mrs. Barton was born March 22, 1936, in River Rouge, the daughter of Robert and Thelma Leola Bowyer.

A 1954 graduate of Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte, Mrs. Barton worked for many years in the Crow's Nest at The Mayflower Hotel in Plymouth. She also was a member of the Democratic Club of Taylor.

She married Robert Barton of Wyandotte on April 15, 1954, shortly before graduating from high school. Her husband was in the Marines. They had four children. The couple lived in Taylor and moved to Wayne in 1964.

In 1980, they were divorced and Mrs. Barton moved back to Taylor.

She enjoyed swimming, working puzzles, and when she lived in Taylor, she belonged to a bunco card club.

She cared for her mother, and when her mother died in 1999, Mrs. Barton moved to Irmo, where she lived with her daughter.

She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 2001. She was a member of The Relief Society, her family said, and greatly enjoyed her calling as a visiting teacher.

Mrs. Barton was a lively, cheerful woman who loved to serve. She enjoyed the visits, numerous cards and desserts she received while battling cancer, and will be missed by many people, said her daughter, Jennifer Barton Van-Meter.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Barton is survived by a son, Patrick, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., another daughter, Elizabeth Barton of Jefferson, Ohio; a brother, Ronald Bowyer of Taylor; as well as four granddaughters, five great-granddaughters, several nieces and nephews and many cousins.

She was predeceased in death by a son, James David Barton, and a grandson, James Ryan Van Meter.

A funeral service was held Oct. 28 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Irmo. Burial was at Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens in Columbia, S.C.

Moments before Mrs. Barton died, her granddaughter, Rebecca Van Meter, finished writing a song for her, "You'll Be With Me."
