William Bowman, Sergeant in Company D, 3rd Missouri Infantry, died 20 May 1911. He was interred at West cemetery in Pittsfield Illinois.
__________
The below is the obituary found for a William Bowman:
Pittsfield, July 4 -- The funeral of the late William Bowman, who passed away Thursday evening at his home here, was conducted from the family residence, yesterday morning. Reverend W. H. Cannon, pastor of the Christian church, had charge of the services, which were attended by a large number of the friends and relatives of the deceased.
He had been in failing health for several months, and despite the best of medical attention and care, his recovery was impossible.
He was born near New Hartford in Pike county, 72 years ago, and aside from the period of the Civil War, when he saw gallant service in the Union army, this has been his home since his birth.
The deceased was married to Miss Malinda Walker, who died about one year since. A son, Walter, also passed away a short time since. Three daughters, Miss Mae who resides at home, and Mrs. Minnie Osborne, both of Pittsfield, and Mrs. Ora Abbott, of New Canton, [are also left] to mourn his loss.
- The Quincy Daily Herald, Quincy, Illinois; Monday, July 4, 1910; page 10.
NB: Sometimes a notice is a reprint, so when it only says a day of the week, the date could be off. However usually it is within a couple weeks' accuracy, even if so. The paper this was found in, is very tattered today, and no other copy was found.
Even with the possibility the found obit was a reprint (later edition) it would not account for the discrepancy between the date of death in the obit vs. the marker application form. Only the military records could confirm marker and obit match one man. There were many William Bowman found in the same time frame and even other William and Malinda Bowman (Civil War pension card, diff. regiment) -- there is insufficient data online to be truly sure of much. Going with obit DOD for now.
