Alexander Lee Bondurant was the son of Alexander Joseph Bondurant and Emily McFarland Morrison. His mother was a first cousin of General Stonewall Jackson. He married Gabriella McPheeters Means, the daughter of Edward John Means and Martha J McPheeters.

On the 1870 Rockfish, Nelson Co., VA census, I found farmer A Bondurant, 34; Emily M Bondurant, 33; ALEXANDER L Bondurant, 5 and Fannie B Bondurant, 3, all VA born.

On the 1880 Hampden, Prince Edward Co., VA census, I found at school, A. Bondurant, age 17, who board there. School name is not listed, but Hampden-Sydney College is located there.

On the 1910 Beat 1, Lafayette Co., MS census, I found teacher Alex L. Bondurant, 44, VA born and wife Gabriella, 37, SC born, she had no children.

Alexander Lee Bondurant’s 6 June 1918 U.S. Passport Application, #31608. He applied in LaFayette, MS listing “For service and travel over-seas in War Y.M.C.A. work. He was born at “Col. Alto” Plantation on 22 Jun3 1865, the son of the late Alex. J. Bondurant, born in VA, 1836. He lived in Germany and Italy from Sept. 1910 to Aug. 1911 as a student and investigator. He was a University Professor at the University of MS and planned to visit England, France, Italy and Switzerland for the War Y.M.C.A. Service in Aug. 1918. A letter dated 19 Jul 1918 from the International Committee of Young Men’s Christian Associations in New York says: This is to certify that Mr. Alexander Lee Bondurant has been appointed a secretary of the International Committee of the Y.M.C.A. for service with the troops of the Italian Army. We hereby endorse his application for a passport to visit France, Great Britain, Switzerland and Italy. Mr. Bondurant is under contract with the Y.M.C.A. for one year. His mother also is a reference and she states he was born 22 Jun 1865 at ‘Col. Alto’ Plantation, Buckingham Co., VA, on 20 May 1918. It has his current photo.

On the 1930 Beat 1, Lafayette, MS census, I found A L BONDURANT, 64, VA born; wife of about 22 years Gabriella Bondurant, 57, SC; sister in law Martha Means, 64, SC; plus MS born servants: Richard Nelson, 24; Equator Nelson, 20; Albert Nelson, 20 and Hattie Nelson, 17.

Alexander Lee Bondurant, born 1865 in Buckingham Co., Virginia, and died in 1937 at the University of Mississippi. Professor of Latin and the Dean of Graduate School, University of Mississippi.

Dr. Alexander Lee Bondurant, 71, dean emeritus of the graduate school and professor of Latin languages at University of Mississippi died of a heart attack this morning at eleven o'clock. His obit was in the 12 Jan 1937 issue of the Biloxi Daily Herald Newspaper.

Ole Miss Classes Suspended Because Of Teacher's Death University, Miss., Jan. 13—(IP)— Classes at the University of Mississippi were suspended today in respect of the late Dr. Alexander Lee Bondurant, dean emeritus of the graduate school, who died yesterday. Dr. Bondurant, professor of Latin languages and oldest pro fessor in point of service, first came here in 1889 as professor of Latin and Greek. A native of Buckingham County, Va., he will be buried in that state. He was author of many publications and was a member of numerous honorary societies. He is survived by his widow, the former Miss Gaberella Means of Natchez, Miss. His obit was in the 13 Jan 1937 issue of the Biloxi Daily Herald.

Dr. Alexander Lee Bondurant, Dean Emeritus of the graduate school and professor of the Latin Language at the University of Mississippi, died January 13, 1937, in Mississippi at the age of 71. Dr. Bondurant, a native of Virginia, attended Hampden-Sydney College, where he took his A.B. and A.M. degrees. He served as an instructor in Latin and Greek at Roundrock Institute in Texas and was a graduate student at the Universities of Texas, Virginia and Harvard before coming to the University of Mississippi. He had been a member of the summer faculties of George Peabody College, the Universities of Iowa, Illinois and Virginia. His works include a Short Latin Grammar and Ancient Athletics.
