The son of Christian & Mary S. Blottenberger, in 1860 he was living with and/or working for Daniel Whiteman in Rapho Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes. He never married.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Mt. Joy, Lancaster County, August 23, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Camp Grebble, Roanoke, Virginia, October 26 as a private with Co. G, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa). He was left behind ill at Chattanooga, Tennessee, September 25, 1863, and transferred to the hospital at New Albany, where he died of "chronic diarrhea."

He is on the burial list as "Alein Blottemburgar," which is incorrect.
