As a young man, John went to Texas and took up photography in Houston and in Galveston. During his stay in Texas, he married his wife Mary. In 1880 the family returned to Maryland. He had a studio, Blessing & Kuhn, on North Charles St. in Baltimore. This studio later became Blessing & Fenge when his son in-law, Henry Fenge, joined him in business. John was also a farmer and enjoyed spending a lot of time working in his orchards.
