Fern F. Bernarde, age 84, township of Almon, Shawano County, died on Monday, May 17, 2010 at her home under the care of her family and Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.

She was born on September 3, 1925 in Langlade County, the daughter of the late George and Vera (Wickman) Pranke.

On September 24, 1945, Fern was united in marriage to Francis Bernarde, Sr. in Waukesha. He preceded her in death on March 29, 1993.

The couple farmed in Mattoon, owned a logging business and operated the Shadyview Ballroom until their retirement. Fern was a member of St. Joseph Holy Family Catholic Church, Phlox. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, painting and sold crafts at several area flea markets.

Survivors include three children, Francis Bernarde Jr., town of Almon, Fern (Butch) Schmidt, Mattoon and Alan (Lori) Bernarde, Marathon; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, David Pranke and Edwin Pranke both of the town of Almon and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Fern was preceded in death by a son Walter and a half-sister, Lorraine.

Visitation:
Visitation will be on Friday from 4PM to 8PM at the Schmidt-Schulta Funeral Home, Birnamwood and again on Saturday from 10AM until the time of service at the church. There will be a Parish Wake service at 7:30PM Friday evening at the funeral home.

Service:
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11AM on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at St. Joseph Holy Family Catholic Church, Phlox. The Rev. David Kiefer and Deacon Thomas Hartman will officiate.

Cemetery:
Intement will be in the town of Almon Cemetery.
