Grant I. Bergman, 87 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Grant was born October 27, 1926 in Holdrege, the second of four children born to Joel and Hildur (Magnuson) Bergman. He attended Hillside School through the eighth grade and graduated from Loomis High School with the class of 1943. He started farming with his dad and brother on the homestead north of Loomis.
In 1951, he was inducted into the U.S. Army, spending one year in Korea. After his honorable discharge in February of 1953, he returned home to farm.
On September 24, 1955, he was united in marriage of Donna Larson from Stromsburg, Nebraska and to this union three children were born: Cynthia, Joel and Julie. The couple made their home on the farm north of Loomis. Having accepted Jesus Christ as his savior at an early age, Grant led his wife and family in the pursuit of a personal relationship with Christ and a life honoring God.
An important part of their lives was being active members of the Holcomb Evangelical Free Church north of Holdrege. Grant sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and served in various leadership positions.
Grant also served on several other boards in the community including the Loomis School Board, the Rural Fire Board, the Loomis Coop Board and the Phelps Memorial Health Center Board. He was past-president of the Phelps-Gosper Feeders Association and in 1990 he received the Pioneer Feeder Award. In 1978, the family received the 100 year Pioneer Homestead Award. He was also a member of the Gideons International.
In 1987, Grant and Donna moved into Holdrege. Even though Grant retired from farming in 1991, he remained active with the farm and brought coffee everyday as long as he was able. In 2009, he moved to Christian Homes Care Community where he resided until his passing.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Isaacson and her husband, Delford; sisters-in-law: Joyce Bergman, Doris Anderson and her husband, Jim and Pauline Baker and her husband, Jack.
Survivors include his wife, Donna of Holdrege; his three children: Cyndi Muilenburg and her husband, Dr. Jeff Muilenburg of Aurora, Nebraska, Joel Bergman and his wife, Darla of Loomis, Julie Whitman and her husband, Del of Lincoln, Nebraska; nine grandchildren: Katie and Nathan Muilenburg of Aurora, Alyssa Saline and her husband, Evan of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Deidre Bergman of Lincoln, Britta and Janessa Bergman of Loomis, Mallory, Isaac and Jayne Whitman of Lincoln; one brother, Lemoyne "Speedy" Bergman of Holdrege; one sister, Marilyn Olenik and her husband, Ken of Rockford, Illinois; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services for Grant I. Bergman was conducted from the Holcomb Evangelical Free Church north of Holdrege, Nebraska on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Todd Marcy, Pastor Murray Jones and Chaplain DeWane Dow, officiating.
Interment was in Moses Hill Cemetery in rural Phelps County, Nebraska, with military honors provided by the U.S. Army National Guard Military Honors Team.
