Albert C. Baugus, 45, was fatally injured last Thursday afternoon on the highway six miles east and about 2 ½ miles north of Hawarden while he and Ed Schoenrock were about to unload a caterpillar from a trailer.

The tractor had been left in gear while being moved to keep it from sliding off and Mr. Baugus neglected to take it out of gear as he cranked the machine. The tractor came forward and caught Mr. Baugus between the caterpillar and the end gate of the dump truck, which was used to pull it.

Mr. Schoenrock freed Mr. Baugus and ran to the Leonard Vander Esch home, a distance of 40 rods, for help. The Frazier ambulance was called and a physician rushed to the scene of the accident. Mr. Baugus died about 2:30, an hour after the accident, in the Dr. M.O. Larson office in Hawarden. His abdomen was crushed and the left arm and pelvic bone broken.

Mr. Schoenrock and Mr. Baugus were employed on a county road project at the time of the accident.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 Monday afternoon at the Frazier Funeral Home and at 2 o'clock at the Methodist Church with Rev. B. Roy Brown officiating. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery.

He was born November 9, 1906, in Union County, South Dakota. He married Mrs. Hattie Eddings of Hawarden in 1933.

He had been employed by Sioux County for 13 years. During World War II for two years he worked in the navy yards at Bremerton, Washington, and then returned to Hawarden and again entered the employ of Sioux County.

Mr. Baugus was a member of the Methodist Church, Odd Fellow's Lodge No. 196 and June Rebekah Lodge No. 589.

Surviving are the widow, Hattie; a son, Curtis, 14; a step-son, Leonard Eddings of Outlook, Montana; two brothers, Ted of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Joe of Spearfish, South Dakota; and a sister, Mrs. Clara Collingwood of Elk Point. His parents, two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
