Gene was born to Joseph E. Baldeck, M.D., and Grace Margaret Meehan Baldeck in Omaha, Neb.

He attended school at St. Stanislaus through eighth grade and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1951. Gene lettered in football and track while at LHS, setting records in track that stood until the 1980s. He also achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

He was offered an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, but turned it down to attend the University of Idaho, and he was a proud member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He received his bachelor's in science in 1955. After his graduation from the U of I, he attended the University of Washington School of Medicine, where he graduated fourth in his class in 1959. He was nominated AOA, an award given to the top medical students. He completed his internship at King County Hospital in Seattle. While in Seattle, Gene met his beautiful wife of more than 50 years, Carrie Burns, who was there at his side until the very end.

Gene and Carrie moved to San Francisco in 1960 so Gene could complete his residency in ophthalmology at the University of California San Francisco. While at UCSF, he was a research fellow for NIH at the Proctor Institute of Ophthalmology.

In 1963, Gene came home to Lewiston to begin his medical practice specializing in ophthalmology. His first office was at the Clearwater Valley Medical, where his father, Joseph Eugene Baldeck, M.D., practiced. He was the first board-certified ophthalmologist in the state of Idaho. Gene practiced medicine for 45 years before retiring in 2008. He loved his patients and considered them an extended part of his family and friends. While practicing medicine in the LC Valley, he was a member of the Tri-State and St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. He was Chief of Staff at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in 1979. He enjoyed teaching medical students precepting for the University of Washington School of Medicine WWAMI program.

Gene was a devoted son, brother, father, grandfather and husband. His passion to his family, friends and faith were evident throughout his life. Gene was a religious man with a strong and devout Catholic faith. He was kind and generous to all. He was a wonderful role model and loved coaching his children through the Valley Boys and Girls Club. Gene was involved in his community, as he was one of the founders of the Lewis-Clark State College Foundation. He endowed a faculty award for teaching excellence in the name of his father, Joseph E. Baldeck, M.D. He served on the board for the North Idaho Children's Home and the Valley Boys and Girls Club. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge in Lewiston.

While Gene studied medicine in Seattle he acquired a love for sailing. He enjoyed sailing on Payette Lake and the slackwaters of the Snake River. He enjoyed snow-skiing and teaching his children to ski. Gene was an avid golfer and his children recall he was not the greatest of golfers, but he loved the game. He was a member for many years of the Clarkston Golf and Country Club and the Lewiston Golf and Country Club. Gene was a lifelong Vandal fan and held season tickets to football for many years. His children fondly recall Gene's rendition of I-D-A-H-O, Idaho, Idaho, Go-Go-Go!

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Eugene Baldeck and Grace Meehan Baldeck.

Memorial donations may be made to the LCSC Foundation.
