Eva (Dalton) Ayles of Hampton NH passed away peacefully at home on October 18, 2009. Eva was the wife of the late George E. Ayles, Sr., who passed away in 2008 two months before their 68th anniversary. Born in Exeter NH on January 26, 1922, she was the daughter of Millard Dalton of Hampton NH and Belle (Davis) Haley of Newburyport MA and the beloved step daughter of Raymond "Red" Haley. She is an alumna of the Newburyport High School Class of 1940.
Eva and George raised their family in Newburyport where they were proprietors of the Twentieth Century Market on High Street. They were active members of the Old South Presbyterian Church, teaching Sunday school and leading the youth group. George and Eva were very enthusiastic dancers and were members of the Carriage Set Round Dancing Club of Rye NH, which was the source of many lifelong friends. Eva was a loving wife and mother who was a creative homemaker, especially gifted in sewing and all hand crafts. Outside her family she is best known as hostess at the Ashworth Hotel Restaurant at Hampton Beach where she will be remembered for her charm and elegant style. She loved working at the Ashworth greeting diners and nurturing the staff.
She leaves her son George Ayles, Jr., and wife Maureen of Hampton; daughter Sherrill Ayles of Hampton; beloved cousin Hazel Lovett Whenal of Minocqua WI (formerly North Hampton NH); sister-in-law Myrtle Woodward of Hampton; and many nieces and nephews.
She was the grandmother of the late Gary Robert Ayles. She was also predeceased by her sister Barbara Dalton Casey of Hyannis MA.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 31st, 2 o'clock, at the United Methodist Church, 525 Lafayette Road, Hampton.
