George E. Ayles, Sr., 91, of Hampton died at home on Father's Day, Sunday, June 15, 2008, just 10 days shy of his 92nd birthday. He was the husband of Eva (Dalton) Ayles with whom he celebrated their 67th the wedding anniversary on August 24th of last year.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on June 25, 1916, he was the youngest of six children of William Clifford Ayles and Bessie (Lynk) Ayles, all survivors of the Halifax Explosion of 1917 during World War I. He was raised in Nova Scotia and Boston. George graduated from North Quincy High School in 1936. He was on the varsity wrestling team and won third place in the State Wrestling Tournament of 1936. He was a veteran of World War II and later served in the U.S. Army Reserve.

He lived for many years in Newburyport where he and his wife were proprietors of the Twentieth Century Market on High Street, and he was a real estate broker and property manager. For many years George was a member of the Ould Newbury Golf Club and had fond memories of times spent there with his cronies: Hayden Eaton, Sonny Canepa, Doc Longley, Eddie Murphy, and Everett Leavitt. Also for many years he was an active member of the Old South First Presbyterian Church of Newburyport were he was a deacon, taught Sunday School and with his wife Eva, led the Senior Fellowship Group.

In his retirement he worked part-time at the Seabrook Dog Track were he enjoyed meeting and greeting people. Up until a few years ago he also played poker with the guys at the "Tuesday Morning Board Meeting." He is a member of St. Mark's Masonic Lodge of Newburyport, the American Legion, and the NHS Alumni Association.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his son, George E. Ayles, Jr. and his wife Maureen of Hampton; a daughter, Sherrill Ayles of Hampton; a sister, Myrtle A. Woodward of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews. He was the grandfather of the late Gary Robert Ayles. He is also predeceased by a sister, Elvira A. Stock and three brothers: Duncan C. Ayles, Sr., H. Havelock Ayles, and Robert Lynk Ayles.

George was an Anatomical Donor for the Massachusetts Medical School program.
