Gale W. Austin, 85, of Washington passed away Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, at his home.

He was born Sept. 17, 1923, in Ava, Ill., to Gale and Grace Austin. He married Pearl (McBride) Austin in Ava on June 1, 1952. She preceded him in death on June 29, 2005.

He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 1950 after serving in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II. He participated in the Peleliu and Okinawa landings in the Southern Pacific Theater.

He is survived by daughter, Paula Austin of Washington, Ill.; and son, Ralph (Sherri) Austin of Portland, Ore.; brother, Lyle Austin of Ava, Ill.; and sister, Betty Woodward of Troy, Mo.

One brother, Keith, preceded him in death.

He worked for BF Goodrich for 17 years, followed by several years with Oliver Tractor Company. He then worked for WABCO 16 years until he retired in 1986.

He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan and an avid Washington High School Panther booster. He loved starting the day playing golf and sharing laughs with his buddies.

Burial of ashes will occur at Glendale Cemetery in Washington. Graveside military rites will be accorded.
