Services for Loretta Jean Austin, 55, of Lubbock will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Iglesia Bautista Templo with the Rev. Elijah W. Austin officiating and Otis Cooks and James Cavanaugh assisting.

Burial will be in City of Lubbock Cemetery under the direction of Ossie Curry Funeral Home of Lubbock.

She died Sunday, March 18, 2001.

She was born May 23, 1945, in New York City. She was the first African-American woman mayor of a city with a populace of more than 100,000, serving as mayor of Pasadena, Calif., from 1982 to 1984. She served as City Director of Pasadena for six years and retired in 1989, a total of 14 years involved in city government.

She moved to Lubbock in 1992 and married Elijah W. Austin on Aug. 4, 1994, in Lubbock. She worked in various positions with the United Methodist Church, Texas Tech Health Sciences Clinic and Accord Insurance Co. In 1998, she became a financial aid counselor at Wayland Baptist University.

She attended New Jerusalem Baptist Church, where she was minister of music, teaching women's Bible study and Youth Sunday School. She was active with the Interdenominational Ministers Wives Alliance, Black Church Fellowship of the Lubbock Baptist Association, served as secretary for the executive of the LBA, and played piano one Sunday a month for Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Jacob Glickman of Pasadena, Samuel Glickman of Atlanta, Ga., and Charles Austin of Lubbock; two daughters, Ashuana Austin of Lubbock and Sharon Thomas of Atlanta City, N.J.; a brother, Ralph Toles of Fresno, Calif.; a sister, Rachell Mylers of Pasadena; and three grandchildren.
