Born in Fairmont, West Virginia on March 30, 1918, she spent most of her youth in Salt Lake City and Los Angeles.
Early in life Bertha Lucille developed a love of music and domestic arts and crafts, which enriched the lives of many. Her best childhood friend was her only sibling, Chuck. Their upbringing in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints became a key component of their character. In 1939, after attending UCLA, Bertha Lucille's love of the gospel took her to the Netherlands and Southern States Missions as a full-time missionary.
Upon her return to Los Angeles, she renewed her friendship with Harold Blaine Anderson. They were soon married in the Salt Lake temple by Apostle Widtsoe on October 2, 1941. The couple then settled in the Los Angeles area (Morningside Park and San Pedro) where they raised two children—Robert and Beverly–in whom they instilled a love of the outdoors, education, family and religion.
When Beverly and Bob became adolescents, she returned to school, attending Los Angeles City College, earning academic honors and a teaching certificate. She spent her entire career at the Amestoy Elementary School in Gardena where she gained a reputation as an exceptional educator.
Following their retirement, Bertha Lucille and Blaine moved to Salt Lake City, where they enjoyed the fellowship of the Millcreek Second Ward members.
She honored her family and her church through diverse expressions of love and devout service. She was particularly proud of having served nine genealogical missions.
Harold Blaine, her eternal and faithful travel companion of 59 years, passed away on December 20, 2000. At the time of Bertha Lucille's death, she left two children, 12 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 22, 2011 in the Millcreek Stake Center Chapel, 4220 South Jeannine (420 east), Salt Lake City, Utah, at 10:00 a.m. Friends and family may call from 8:30 to 9:30 prior to services. Interment will follow at Salt Lake City Cemetery, 4th Ave and "N" Street.
