He was a graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy, Class of 1978; a graduate of Canton ATC, Class of 1981; and a graduate of Potsdam State University in December of 1986 where he obtained a Bachelor's Degree in History and received his teaching certificate. He was a very active member of the Boy Scouts Troop 3 in his youth, and loved camping, hiking, telling tall tales, talking about history and spending time with his family.
Surviving were his five sisters, Linda (John) Burrows of Ogdensburg; Ann (John) Berkman of Champlain; Doreen (Jim) Bennett of Rochester and Marilyn Hughto and Carolyn (Donald) McPherson both of Ogdensburg.
He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Robert W. Ashley and Shawn M. Ashley.
