Richard Baker Aldersey arrived from London England with his 2nd wife Elizabeth Emma Wilkinson and sons and daughters Eliza, Mary Ann, (Sarah Jane), Harry Lee, Joseph Hayden, Mary Ainsley Arabella Harriet and Algernon Lumley aboard the Dorothy on the 6th June 1849.
.
He bought land in the village of Bellevue, at the western end of McLaren Vale, and built a small cottage by the creek and planted a garden and date palm. The house that still stands today is inhabited and the tall, gaunt, lonely palm still bends in the winds that blow along the valley. In 1851, Mr Aldersey purchased 330 acres of land adjoining Hope Farm and built a substantial house from ironstone found on the property which he named ‘Amery’ after his birthplace near
Alton, in Hampshire. Although very run down the house still stands today on private property known as "Aldersey"
.
He was the brother of Mary Ann Aldersey who is reputed to be the first female missionary to China and who is buried close by in the Congregational Church Cemetery McLaren Vale - (Find A Grave Memorial# 169287311)
