Rozelle D. Atherton, 90, Auburn, Kansas, passed away Friday, September 7, 2012, at Homestead of Auburn. He was born October 18, 1921, at Oberlin, Kansas, the son of Earl and Myrtle Mae Brown Atherton.

He graduated from Washburn Rural High School. Mr. Atherton was a farmer and a stockman. He also worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 15 years.

He was a member of the Auburn Presbyterian Church and the United Steel Workers of America Union, Local No. 307.

Rozelle married Maxine Alexander, January 31, 1940, at St. Mary's, Kansas. They purchased a farm three miles west of Auburn in 1940, where they lived until moving to Homestead of Auburn in 2001. Maxine preceded him in death March 22, 2011.

He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Irvin and Eugene Atherton, a sister, Genevieve Clemens, and a great-granddaughter, Tara Hansen.

He is survived by two sons, Gale (Sue) Atherton, Topeka, KS, and David (Carolyn) Atherton, Gainesville, FL; two daughters Carol (Gerald) Garrett, Carbondale, KS, and Ruth (John) Ensley, Hoyt, KS; 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at the Auburn Presbyterian Church, Auburn, Kansas. Cremation will follow. Inurnment will be in Auburn Cemetery at a later date. He will lie in state from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Carey Funeral Home, Burlingame, where family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Auburn Presbyterian Church, Midland Care Hospice or Homestead of Auburn, and sent c/o the funeral home, P.O.
