She grew up in the Oakland neighborhood of Topeka, and attended the Topeka Schools. She was a member of the Auburn Presbyterian Church, Auburn, Kansas.
Maxine married Rozelle D. Atherton, January 31, 1940, at St. Marys, Kansas. He survives at the home.
Other survivors include two sons, Gale (Sue) Atherton, Topeka, KS, and David (Carolyn) Atherton, Gainesville, FL; two daughters, Carol (Gerald) Garrett, Carbondale, KS, and Ruth (John) Ensley, Hoyt, KS; 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and six great great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Patricia Alexander, Bremerton, WA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Leonard Jr., Roy and Howard; a sister, Patricia; and one great great-granddaughter.
A funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011, at the Auburn Presbyterian Church. Cremation will follow. Inurnment will be in Auburn Cemetery at a later date. Maxine will lie in state from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, at Carey Funeral Home, Burlingame, where family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Auburn Presbyterian Church or Midland Care Hospice, and sent c/o the funeral home, P.O. Box 196, Burlingame, KS 66413.
