Richard Ralph Blaisdell, 83, formerly of Winthrop, passed away Monday, July 4, 2016 at Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice House in Auburn after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Gardiner on April 28, 1933, the son of Cecil and Kathleen (Dill) Blaisdell.
Educated in Augusta schools, Richard was a graduate of Cony High School, Class of 1951, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and played trumpet in the school band.
After high school, he continued to play music. He often played at the Hallowell Grange on Saturday nights, where he earned enough money to buy his first car.
Richard married Janet Martin and together they had a daughter, Sandra. He then married Constance Goodchild and they also had one daughter, Susan. Constance passed away in 1985 and he later married Rita Dulac. Although they were no longer married at the time of his passing, they remained close, often helping each other with chores, errands, and taking care of each other's cats.
Richard found employment driving a bus between Augusta and Gardiner and regularly transported factory workers and chartered many sports teams over the years and eventually bought out the R & S Busline. He later worked for the State of Maine as a mason in the grounds/maintenance department at Augusta Mental Health Institute before transferring to Bangor Mental Health Institute, retiring in 1998.
Richard was an avid collector of many things, but particularly enjoyed classic die cast collectable cars. Known locally as the Candy Man or Fudge Man, he made fudge and candies, which he joyfully gave away to family, friends and local businesses he frequented. He will always be remembered as a man of simple means with a big heart and an amazing sense of humor.
Richard was predeceased by his parents, twin brother, Robert, his brother, Malcolm "Buddy", and granddaughter Regan S. Pierce.
He is survived by two daughters, Sandra Pierce, her husband Ron, and great grandson, Jordon of Emerado, North Dakota, and his grandson, Randy Pierce of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Susan Baker, husband Rob, and grandson Beau of Monmouth, as well as several special cousins and longtime friends. He is loved and missed by his Burmese cat, Pumpkin.
A private interment will be at Maine Avenue Cemetery, Farmingdale.
