Publisher and politician, the brother and business partner, of Robert Chambers. The brothers were influential in the mid-19th century, in both scientific and political circles.
Lord Provost of Edinburgh 1863-1869, he was responsible for the restoration of St Giles Cathedral amongst other buildings. Chambers Street is named after him and is the location of a statue of him, by local sculptor John Rhind.

This Chapel is in memory of WILLIAM CHAMBERS of Glenormiston LLD, Publisher, Lord Provost of Edinburgh 1865-69 to whose munificence Scotland is indebted for the complete restoration of this ancient Cathedral 1883.
