BOY,9 FALLS TO HIS DEATH
IN VANCEBURG
VANCEBURG Ky.

A 9 year-old
Vanceburg boy fell 75
feet to his death, Friday while
trying to retrieve a baseball bat
from a cliff near where he and
two: friends had been playing.
The boy James ( Jamie) Antonio
suffered a broken neck
and fractured skull in the fall,
0. M. Plummer Jr. Lewis
County Coroner said.
He was the son
of Mrs. Betty McCane
Antonio.


Jamie plunged to his death
when the bush he was holding while leaning over
the cliff broke free. The accident occurred
about 3:30 p.m.

The boys were playing on
Alum Rock, a popular play area
in the east end of Vanceburg,
when their baseball bat fell
over the cliff.
One of the boys, Danny Mc-
Kinney, went down to a ledge
bout 10 feet below to get the
bat and Jamie was l e a n i n g
over the edge to help, him when
the bush:gave away.

McKinney and the third boy,
George Royal, ran for help, but
Antonio was dead when the ambulance
arrived.

The victim was a fourth grade
st u d e n t at Vanceburg Elementary
School.
A native of Vanceburg, the
boy lived in Cleveland and Cin-
cinnati until about a year ago
when he moved back to Vance-
burg.
Other survivors are his father,
Gino Antonio of Torrance,
Calif.; his grandmother, Mrs.
Millie Tolle of Vanceburg, and
his grandfather Ancil McCane
of Peebles Ohio.

Funeral services are to be
held at 2 p.m. M o n d a y at
Vanceburg Methodist Church,
with Re.F. Sharpe offici-
ating. Burial is to be in Black Oak Cemetery.
