Cadet on the Edmund Fitzgerald. Ship's Cadet aboard the SS Edmund Fitzgerald which sank in a storm on Lake Superior, November 10, 1975, with all hands lost.
————————————————————————————————————————————————

David Elliot "Cowboy" Weiss was born November 13, 1953 in Agoura, Los Angeles County, California, USA. He was the son of Aaron Harry and Selma Nadell Weiss. He was single and had no known children.
David was studying at the Great Lakes Maritime Academy which is located in Traverse City, Michigan, and was a Cadet aboard the ship SS Edmund Fitzgerald, known as the Pride of the American Flag, fondly referred to by the shipmates as the Big Fitz, or the Fitz. The Mighty Fitz met her fateful end along with its crew of 29 men, including David, the night of November 10, 1975 on Lake Superior during a storm called "The Storm of a Century." Waves reached known heights of 35 feet. It was just a few days shy of David's 22nd birthday.
Cadet means Can And Does Every Thing. It is said that a ship is run by two people, the Captain and also the Cadet. A Cadet is a trainee learning every aspect of the ship, which includes everything from maintenance to the maneuvering of the ship. When his training is completed he will take an exam, when upon passing the Cadet will earn his stripes as 3rd Mate. From there he can continue being promoted until he becomes Captain and receives his own boat to command.
David and his fellow crewmen of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald were loved and admired by countless many, and have taken a place in the hearts of people across the world. Their deaths brought about many changes in safety and more that has since saved many lives of those serving on the seas worldwide. May David and his crew members memories live on, and may we celebrate the dynamics of this mighty group of men who worked hard and lived each day even harder until that fateful day the gales of November called them Home.
May their legend live on…

The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
Written and Sung by Gordon Lightfoot

"The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy"

"When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck
Saying, "Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya."
[Latter version:] At seven PM it grew dark, it was then
He said, "Fellas, it's been good to know ya."

Fellas, it truly was good to know ya…
Salute.

David may you rest in the eternal peace of God.
We remember.
Rest In Peace Cowboy. God is with you.
