HARLINGEN, TX--Olga Maxine Smith Abbott, 85, passed away Sunday, February 15, 2009 at her residence in Harlingen.

Maxine was born on a farm 12 miles southwest of Corpus Christi, TX on April 5, 1922. She married John Alexander Abbott Sr. in 1941 and they were longtime residents and farmers of the area.

Maxine was instrumental in promoting the production and use of cotton and "made in the USA" products. She was a Founding member of the Ladies For Cotton, Charter member of the National Cotton Women's Committee and supported the Fashion Group International natural fiber fashion show. She also was a member of the First Baptist Church in Harlingen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, A.L. Smith and Lurah Olga Taylor Smith; her brother, Dane Lamar Smith and his wife, Bettye Ann.

She is survived by her husband, John A. Abbott Sr., Sons, Jack (Karen) Abbott, Mark (Susan) Abbott; grandchildren, Heather (Mrs. William) Adair, John Abbott III, Mark Abbott II, Luke Abbott, Julianne Abbott, Nathan Abbott and Timothy Abbott; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

As per her wishes the burial will be private.

A gathering will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Maxine and John's house, 26351 FM 1595 in Harlingen.

Maxine will be fondly remembered for her devotion to cotton, homemade peach ice cream, cheers from the sidelines, and for her devotion to family and friends.
