Arthur and his family moved from Virginia to Ohio between 1861 and 1864. Arthur H. Allen enlisted as a Private in Company K, 16th United States Colored Infantry on 13 Jan 1865.
Service: Duty at Chattanooga and in Middle and East Tennessee until he mustered out on 13 Jan 1866.

On 20 Jun 1870 he lived in Xenia, Ohio.
His wife Kitty (Kittie) was born in VA about 1824. His known children who lived in Ohio were: William (a widower born in Charleston, WV c. 1846), Charles (born in VA c. 1850), Arthur (born in VA c. 1856), Caroline (born in VA c. 1857), Phillip (born in Charleston, WV c. 1861)and Baldwin (born in OH c. 1864). A seventh child who did not survive is credited to Kittie on the 1900 US Census.
In 1880 his address was 125 E. Market St., Xenia, OH. and he had his grand-sons Lee (born in OH c. 1877) and Lewis (born in OH c. 1879) living with him.
Arthur H. and William were both enumerated as veterans of Co. K, 16th USCT living at 633 S. Market St., Xenia, OH in 1890.
After his death Kittie received a widow's pension for his service in the war. She continued to live at 633 S. Market street with her son William and his Lee (Leon), daughter-in-law Mamie.

The headstone for this soldier has been lost. It was originally provided by Vermont Marble Co. for Pvt. Arthur Allen, Co. K, 16th Reg't. U.S.C.T. and sent to Cherry Grove, Xenia, OH
