Prior to the Spanish-American War the unit was known as 9th Battalion Infantry, Ohio National Guard. The state of Ohio redesignated the unit the 9th Battalion Ohio Volunteer Infantry. When they mustered in for federal service the unit was redesignated the 9th Battalion Ohio Infantry, U.S. Volunteers. The 9th Battalion was the only Ohio unit in which African-American soldiers served in the Spanish-American War.
