Civil War: Company G, 7th California Infantry

Washington Norton enlisted as a private at Placerville, California, October 17, 1864, and was mustered into Company G, 7th California Infantry, October 30. He was posted to Arizona Territory, where, according to his Compiled Military Service Record he died, while attached to Company A of his regiment, of disease at Fort Yuma, California, December 18, 1865. The Compiled Military Service Record shows that Private Norton dictated his list will and statement to Second Lieutenant George E. Spoor December 11, 1865. In that statement Private Norton stated that his only living relatives were his sisters, Mary Jane and Sara Jane Norton. Captain John W. Smith signed Private Norton’s Final Statement December 18, 1865.

NOTE: His surname, without his first name, appears in a non-sequential list of burials at Fort Yuma, compiled in the 1870's, but his name does not appear among the 159 other remains that were reinterred to San Francisco National Cemetery after Fort Yuma closed.
