Lucille (Taylor) ALLEN (05/22/1917 - 05/13/2013)

Lucille, age 95, of Spokane Valley, WA passed away on May 13, 2013 at the Adult Family Home of her grandson, Joshua and Carrie Allen where she was affectionately known to everyone as "Grandma". Lucille was born on May 22, 1917 in Sandpoint, Idaho the fifth of nine children born to Reverend Wallace and Edith Taylor. Her family moved to Elk, WA in 1927 and then to Otis Orchards, WA in 1931 where she attended Otis Orchards HS and there she met her future husband, Alfred Allen. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on November 8, 2008.

In 1940, Al and Lucille moved to the Seattle area where she worked for the Boeing Co. as a "Rosie the Riveter" during WWII. In 1943 they returned to Otis Orchards where Lucille was in charge of organizing youth groups at the Otis Community Church as well as serving as PTA president and being a Camp Fire leader. In 1952 the family moved to Spokane Valley where Lucille worked at Barney's Grocery and then in the commissary at Fairchild AFB.

Lucille and Al were founding members of Spokane Valley Nazarene Church in 1955. She was very active in the church being Sunday School Superintendent for many decades, acting as treasurer for many activities as well as being the church historian.

She loved to cook and her pies were so prized that one sold for $975.00 at a church auction. She loved to garden and grew the most beautiful roses. She was also an avid knitter and handmade a baby blanket for every newborn in her church.

Lucille is preceded in death by her husband, Alfred in 2009, her son Alfred Jr and daughter Marian Allen-Davis.

She is survived by her daughter Faye (John) Braun of Issaquah, WA, and sons Mel (Lynette) Allen and Ron (Susan) Allen both of the Spokane Valley. Lucille has 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held at Spokane Valley Church of the Nazarene on Friday, May 31st at 2pm. Memorial donations can be made to the church at 15515 E. 20th Ave., Spokane Valley, WA 99037.
