Harold J. Ard, 76, formerly of Herrick died November 17, 2016 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Harold was born August 26, 1940, the first child of Jacob S. and Hazel E. Taylor Ard. He attended Herrick schools and graduated from Herrick High School in 1958. He attended Illinois State University earning a B.S. degree in 1962 and Dominican University, M.S. Degree in 1968. He spent his professional life working as a teacher, library manager and consultant.

Harold served as Director of the Barrington Public Library and the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, both in Northern Illinois. In 1972 he moved to Mississippi to become Director of the Jackson Metropolitan Library System and later Associate Director of the Rowland Medical Library, University of Mississippi. He taught college courses at Jackson State University, the University of Mississippi and the University of South Mississippi.

In 1985 he moved to Fort Worth, Texas and served as Library Manager until his retirement in 1998. He also taught courses at the University of Texas in Arlington. After retirement he devoted his energies to a lifelong hobby, antiques. His successful business at the Handley Antique Mall is still in operation. Harold attended Arborlawn United Methodist Church.

Harold was listed in the prestigious Marquis publication “Who’s Who in America”. He has several published journal articles and was well known as a consultant and lecturer on library and management topics. He served on the Architecture Committee of the American Library Association (Chicago) for many years and was a registered building consultant.

He is survived by two children, Teri Ann Ard and Mark Alan Ard both of Washington State; sister JoAnn Moutrey of Herrick and two brothers, Don of San Antonio, Texas and Terry of Lakewood, Illinois.

Harold enjoyed life and his chosen life’s work. His legacy will continue in the lives he touched.

Funeral Information

Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 23, 2016 in Herrick Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jay Huddleston officiating. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery, Herrick. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church.
