PEORIA - Steven J. Aeschleman, 56, of Peoria passed away at 11:23 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

Aeschleman, known to friends and sports fans as Ash, was born Oct. 13, 1953, in Peoria to LaVerne and William "Bill" Aeschleman.

Surviving are his mother, LaVerne; brother-in-law, Wally Zich of Peoria; one niece, Alex Zich of Chicago; one nephew, Joe Zich of Peoria; and many cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bill; and his sister, Gynell L. Zich.

Since the early 1990s, Steve worked part time in the Journal Star sports department. He gathered scores and scoring summaries from sports involving more than 60 high schools. His voice was familiar to coaches and athletic directors across Illinois thanks to his frequent calls for information. His voice was even more familiar to fans at Illinois Valley Central High School, where he worked as public-address announcer.

A 1971 IVC graduate, he was a member of an IVC golf team that for 38 years held the school record of 150 strokes at Arrowhead Country Club. Ash shot a 39 that day.

Steve was inducted to the IVC athletics hall of fame in February 2005. Among his proudest moments were watching IVC reach the state football playoffs for the last five seasons, win a state baseball championship in 2006 and place second in Class A boys basketball that same year.

Steve also was a part-time statistician and PA announcer for Bradley University baseball for two decades, a clubhouse manager for the Peoria Chiefs and served as a statistician for numerous other amateur sports leagues, including the Sunday Morning League.

A fan of the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Red Wings, Steve enjoyed long walks and was known for his witty personality and spot-on impersonations. He enjoyed birthday celebrations and class reunions.

Ash was a member of Mossville United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, at Weber-Hurd Funeral Home in Chillicothe, with a funeral service to follow at 7 p.m. The Rev. Bill Adams will officiate. His graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at the Apostolic Christian Cemetery in Kickapoo. All are welcome.

Memorials may be made to the IVC Athletic Department.
