Husband of Sarah FELKINS Burk, married 28 December 1844

Joseph Burk, a member of a Arkansas Military Unit, Captain Bevins Independent Company of the Arkansas Cavalry, and John A. Tucker, a neighbor, were killed on September 6, 1864, by a squad of Confederate soldiers or bushwhackers and were buried by their wives in a common grave.

According to Joseph Burk's widow's (Sarah Felkins Burk) pension application, Burk was a member of Captain Bevins Independent Company of the Arkansas Calvary. However the National Archives has no record of federal military service for Joseph Burk. Captain Bevins' Company was probably an informal organization which some referred to as "home guards". Joseph Burk's widow's application for a federal pension was denied.

Several versions of the story of their death exist. All versions have been printed in The Madison County Musings, the quarterly of The Madison County Genealogical & Historical Society in Huntsville, Arkansas.
