DELBERT B. AIRY
Delbert B. Airy, the son of John M. and Melvina (Crane) Airy, was born March 31, 1881, in Franklin township, Clarke county, Iowa, and departed from us July 9, 1958 at the Yocom hospital in Chariton, being 77 years of age.
He spent his boyhood and young manhood in the vicinity of his birth. He moved with his parents to Derby in 1904.
He was united in marriage to Dora Pearcy March 15, 1906, at the Derby Methodist parsonage. They were blessed with seven children: Iola, who died in infancy; Bert Milo, who passed away in 1926 at the age of 17 years; Mildred, who maintains her residence with her parents; Loren Lloyd, James Eldon and Raymond Paul, who live near Marion; and John Madison of Des Moines.
They provided materially for the physical and educational growth of their children. Each Sunday they took their children with them to Sunday school and church to provide for their spiritual growth. The children were taught to be good, honest and active citizens in the community.
The first home was established on a farm southeast of Derby, where they lived for a year and a half. On Oct. 20, 1907, they moved to a farm seven miles northwest of Derby. This was their home for the next 44 years. They retired from their farm and moved to Chariton in 1951.
Jan. 29, 1911, he united with the Church of Christ at Last Chance. He became an active and conscientious member of this church, trying to live as an exemplary Christian in his home and community. He served in the many offices of the church throughout the rest of his active life such as Sunday school teacher, superintendent, deacon, elder, and on the board of trustees. He never hesitated to give either his time or money to the support of the church.
He gave untiringly of his strength, time, energy, and support as a helper and leader in many of the community activities and drives, such as Red Cross, Derby Fair, Township Board of Trustees, County Farm Bureau Board, School Board, Cemetery Board and many others. He was always ready to help his neighbors and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Nathan H. Airy, and sister, Julia McPhetridge.
Those surviving him are: his wife, Dora, a loving and devoted companion, who was his constant helper and during his illness which lasted 10 years, she gave her time and attention toward his care and welfare, and children, Mildred, Loren, John, Eldon and Raymond.
