The son of William A. & Martha (Stewart) Adams, in 1860 he was a laborer presumably living in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Carlisle March 3, 1865, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. H, 28th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 18, 1865.

He married Mary Catherine Shugart and fathered Molly (b. ?, d. 1871). He died from "chronic Bright's [disease]" with "old age" a contributing factor.
